Last English Manager to Win Premier League?
Sadly an English Manager has never won the Premier League since it came into being, and even more depressing is the fact I can only think of 2 English mangers that have managed to get teams into the Champions League by finishing in the top 4, Bobby Robson with Newcastle and Harry Redknapp with Spurs

Why do Englishman not make good managers anymore?, bit like the National side that’s been pretty dire for 25 odd years, even the FA Cup has only been won by 1 English Manager in over 20 years, Redknapp with Portsmouth.

How have we let ourselves slide so far down the ladder?

FCJ Stubbo makes the point perfectly, English managers have to work abroad if they want to earn the opportunity to work at a big Premier League club because the owners of these clubs are looking for managers with proven records in Europe as to them success in The Championship is about as relevant as doing it in the Conference.

Re: Last English Manager to Win Premier League?
I think there are good English managers but the top clubs have foreign owners who want foreign managers. The bigger the profile the better - especially if they come from a club they can poach a few decent players from.

When a rich club employs a good English manager, gives them good money and time to build a team and reputation that attracts other good players, I think we would see one win the Premier League.

Too much money involved though these days and too much to lose. Success has to be instant, players are pampered and moody. Fans expectations are high due to all the bullshit media around the PL.
It's not a league, it's an industry with no patience.

Re: Last English Manager to Win Premier League?
The other reason...anyone with a brain and who has achieved something in the game has an easier ride and an easier route into future careers through TV/media now than they do through management.

Successfull management requires intelligence, analytical skills, motivational skills, an understanding of what makes people 'tick', and to be prepared to take on a lot of stress.

Top level pro's these days make so much money out of the game as players, there is not a lot of value in becoming managers.

As an example:

Beckham, Carragher, Shearer, Neville x 2, James, McManaman, Owen...in days gone by these guys route would have been to head into management.

Nowadays TV is a much more enticing option.

Secondly, there are only 20 Premier League jobs available. But how often do you hear of English managers going abroad, having a go at management in 'lesser leagues' and then coming back to the Premier League with that experience. Hardly ever. For starters it would mean learning a new language, and doing something unfamiliar.

This is in my opinion why foreign managers are more attractive propositions. They have greater experience, have shown greater drive, have greater knowledge of a wider sector of the game, and by not being blinkered about where they work, are able to demonstrate the ability in the top flight of places like France, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Holland etc before coming to England.

These places are which all have the exposure to European competition, the potential to deal with top players and to show the ability to challenge for something. While English managers are only targeting the Championship and League One as their learning grounds, they will never break the foreign manager dominance.

Re: Last English Manager to Win Premier League?
I think the general consensus is the average English football player is not very bright so why would we expect the average manager to be much different?
Too many seem to have believed that having played the game that is the only qualification needed to be a manager and in the past average intelligence combined with a bit of authority was all you required to manage in England.
Also now that the Premier League is to all extent and purpose an international league managers and players who have seen the world have a distinct advantage at the top clubs, very few Englishmen fulfil that criteria.
Hopefully going forward the pool of managerial talent will grow as more look at the bigger picture throughout their career otherwise any that do surface will be the exception rather than the rule.

Re: Last English Manager to Win Premier League?
English managers are not given the chance by top clubs. The risk is too great with the amount of money involved and therefore it is a safer option to get top managers from abroad than giving a lower league English manager a chance.

When was this GOLDEN era of English managers?
Always a lot of Scots in the jobs when there weren't many foreign managers around.
You do get the feeling that the English managers aren't in the frame when potential title winners are looking.

PD

Merely stating that Robson overall was a more successful manager than Redknapp, his major success (as was Venables) was at Barcelona in SPAIN though, but I think you knew that!.

Robson though is/was the best English manager IMO since the days of Clough, none of the current bunch come near him.

Howard Wilkinson and before that Howard Kendall so maybe we have to find an Englishman called Howard and we'll be fine.
